One player in the newly released Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition has reportedly cheated their way to the top of a leaderboard, according to newly surfaced footage of their Donkey Kong run.
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a collection of 13 Famicom games designed for competitive play, featuring four different modes that prioritize speed. However, the game isn't intended to be a speedrunning title, and the use of glitches is theoretically prohibited.
Despite this, at least one player appears to have exploited a glitch to claim the top spot on a leaderboard during the July 22–29 weekly challenge. Specifically, the player used a glitch in the Donkey Kong "Barrel Roll" challenge that allowed them to climb multiple invisible ladders by sticking to the right side of the screen. This maneuver enabled them to complete the level with just a single jump in an impressive 15.68 seconds. Twitter user MetroidMike64 was among the first to report the use of this glitch.
The questionable run later appeared on the official NWC: NES Edition website in Japan, sparking complaints from fans. Some players expressed frustration, saying they were discouraged from competing after realizing they were up against players exploiting glitches. However, it's possible that the leaderboard rankings are automated, and the appearance of this run on the official website doesn't necessarily mean Nintendo is condoning the use of glitches.

Typically, NWC: NES Edition flags and suspends runs where players attempt to use glitches, displaying an error message when a prohibited action is detected. This happens with well-known glitches, such as those in Donkey Kong or attempts to go out of bounds in Super Mario Bros. within the game.
It remains unclear whether the inclusion of the Donkey Kong invisible ladder glitch was an oversight by Nintendo. The company has yet to address the issue publicly. Meanwhile, some fans are questioning the game's lack of live leaderboards, as they had assumed the delay in publishing rankings was to filter out glitch runs—something this incident suggests may not be happening.
