Since the first Fallout game, the series has featured unique characters who assist players on their adventures. Notable companions include Ian, Katja, and Tycho from the original game, as well as Nick Valentine, Piper Wright, and the Automatron from Fallout 4. These characters not only help in combat but also offer unique dialogue that adds depth to their personalities. Initially released without NPCs, Fallout 76 added them in the widely praised Wastelanders update. Now, Bethesda appears to be further enhancing the game by potentially adding companions.

According to Windows Central, a dataminer from the Fallout 76 community discovered evidence of an upcoming companion system. Bethesda had previously hinted at a companion pet system in its 2021 roadmap, but the topic has largely remained unaddressed since then. The dataminer found code indicating a multi-stage tutorial for a new companion system, complete with pet-themed icons, suggesting that players might start with a cat or a dog. Additionally, one image implies that players could give commands to their companions to follow or stay, similar to earlier Fallout games.

If previous Fallout titles are any indication, this revamped companion system could eventually expand beyond just pets. While Dogmeat is a beloved companion, each game has also featured humanoid NPCs that can be recruited. Though no humanoid companions have been datamined yet, the community speculates on which existing Fallout 76 NPCs might make great followers. It remains unclear if these companions will contribute to the storyline with dialogue responses. Besides the companion pets, the datamined code also suggests that four-star Legendaries will be part of the same update.
